L/O: To explore possible tasks and decide on one.

Genre: Rock

L/O: To analyse the use of media language in similar products and apply to planning.

On this cover the target audience is a rock-enjoying type of person that has some stereotypical emo or goth properties, I see this from the red and black colours that are prevalent in those cultures and the magazine also uses other colours like yellow to bring out words, numbers and details that can be easily recognised by the reader.  The double-page spread on the right also follows the colours of emo and goth cultures and solely that, the style of the title on the page is like a pool of blood, also following the emo and goth stereotypical colours.

L/O: Analyse how media language has been used in examples

Masthead:
The masthead is bold, sans serif, and in a style of fragmentation, this follows the codes and conventions of rock magazines and genre because the male, middle age or teen audience can relate to the masculinity of the word fragmentation and the strong, bold style of the title.

Main Cover Lines:
"The heartbreak of Frank Iero", this is the largest and most bold writing other than the title, it references the main image and gives an idea of the main story, also the theme of heartbreak could link to the target audience of rock by including their own heartbreaks that is stereotypically common within rock culture.

Characteristics:
Kerrang quite often uses a yellow colour to bring out details on their covers, the colour of yellow is used because it does not fit with any other particular genre of magazine. It also uses its own unique font and flour scheme that fits the artist or band being shown, it also has its own unique style of wording that is easy to understand.

Production Value:
The stereotypical budget for a rock magazine is low budget, this is shown by kerrang due to it having a messy layout and cheap writing, which the audience for this likes and enjoys.

Ideology:
They promote the idea of everybody just enjoying their own thing, especially by giving band's stories and how unique their lives have been and currently are.

Design Features:
Main, large image. Smaller images that show the other people featured in the magazine.

Colour Palette & Typography:
The font on this cover is bold and sans serif, this shows masculinity which links to the target audience of this magazine. The size of the text is rather large, once again showing masculinity. The colours used are mainly red, black and white, with yellow to bring out  certain features. These colours are linked with rock culture, and yellow is a neutral colour that does not link with a particular culture or style.

How are the people or areas featured represented:
The main person on the cover is wearing normal, casual clothing, in this case it is a brown jacket, this follows the rock theme of not being rich and Kerrang's style that in most cases has people wearing normal clothes.

Who is the target audience and how does it appeal to them:
The target audience is teen to middle aged males, working/middle class and with an interest in music. The magazine appeals to this by giving a masculine style to the font and colours. The colours link with the goth/rock culture, these cultures enjoy rock music and would be pulled into buying this magazine due to it also being a part of their culture.

Main Title:
The main title follows the codes and conventions of rock music magazines by being bold, having its colour as red and white, and being a unique, sans serif font that represents the masculinity of the readers.

Main image:
The main image and other images are all in black and white with a red tone added to them. This follows the codes and conventions of rock because black and white is seen as a masculine and depressing colour scheme.

Layout codes and conventions:
The page on the left almost only has an image, while the page on the right has all the information on it, showing the importance of images and photography in the rock magazine culture.

House style:
Kerrang usually has lots of information with very small writing, while the title is always big and bold to stand out for the reader to notice easily. They also commonly use the red black and white colour scheme to follow rock conventions.

Production values:
Low production values due to it being put together in a fast style that appeals to the audience.

Ideology:
They show the idea that it is okay to be yourself, and shows artists and bands that do exactly that, and that the audience can relate and look up to.

Design features:
Lack of text on the left for imagery, and lots of writing on the right to give information in a confined space, letting the reader enjoy the images and the information.

Colour palette and typography:
The font is sans serif and bold to show masculinity. The colours are red white and black to show the rock culture.

Representation:
The people are shown as people who enjoy rock and are enthusiastic about it.

Target Audience: Middle age/Teen people, working/middle class, British/American, the codes and conventions of the magazine pages show the rock style.

Coursework Planning

L/O: To plan an effective product aimed at a specific audience using appropriate codes & conventions.

Layout

House Style:
The main image links to the artist and topic spoken about in the magazine's most important pages. It also uses a sans serif, bold font throughout the whole magazine. The colours usually are red, white, black and yellow.

Symmetrical and Asymmetrical:
Most of the magazine is asymmetrical.

Columns and Boxes:
The cover lines are usually in boxes that keep it separate from the image, on the double-page spread the information is usually in columns.

Ratio of Copy, Photography and Space:
The wording on the cover is large, the image is larger and there is not much space. On the double-page spread the wording is very small, the image usually taking up at least one page, there is not a lot of space left.

Headline:
The headline is usually under the person in the main image.

Caption:
The caption is usually in the middle of the image.
