Representation Theory

Butsch (1992)

Presents working class males in the media as "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well intentioned but dumb. In almost all working class series, the male is flawed, some more than others." This means that the stereotype that is believed is that working class males are stupid.

Hebdige (1998)

Hebdige says youths as represented as "Youth are fun", "Youth as trouble maker." Stereotyping that teens are causing anti-social behaviour around the older generation and that some just accept it. And that the youth are also represented as fun as another stereotype.

Hall (1994)

Hall says that youths are "Depressed and likely to seek excitement through crime, sex, drugs and drinking." Stereotyping that the youth don't want to be happy or healthy and are weak towards their reality and don't like what's in place now.

Mackillon (2002)

Mackillon says "Males are shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image." Against the stereotype of women being sexualised, and men now being made to look good for women in media.

Gauntlett (2002)

Gauntlett says that males in media are "Alpha males who control the action with violence", this means that men in media are stereotyped as strong and controlling.

Laura Mulvey (1975)

Laura says that women in media are represented as "Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience." created for the "Male gaze"
