Music Mag Covers

L/O: To create a music magazine cover showing understanding of representation.

Name: Complete

Peer Assessment by Rhys: You have colours that don't clash so they match with each other. You could vary the background colour more.

I have added a masthead that is in a style that suggests the genre and who the target audience might be. I have featured cover lines and a main cover line that show the features in the magazine. The background is red which signifies darkness and blood, the picture of Kian shows the reader the genre due to Kian wearing dark leather and playing the guitar.
I could vary the colour and variation on the background to add more emotion and contrast to the background. I could refine Kian's hair due to it being imperfect at the moment. I could add more cover lines that are even smaller. I could add a free CD sign on the cover as well.

I have added a free CD sign, I have changed the filter on Kian to make him more stylised and fitting. I have changed the cover lines and the name to make it more relevant to the genre

Cover Analysis

L/O: To analyse the cover of a magazine, linking it to genre and audience

Babyboomers - The generation of people between 1946 - 1964

Diversification - To become more diverse

Audience Address - Addressing the audience

Discerning - Good judgement

House Style - Editing conventions

Intertextuality - When a piece of text refers to another piece of media in the text

Shot type - Mid shot due to it going to his chest.
This is to add to the style of the magazine that will make it require less editing, this will also show who the star vehicle and show the reader if they like them and enjoy the magazine or not.

Star Vehicle - Dave Grohl, rock musician.
Dave Grohl is a well respected artist and will attract more readers in, mainly males that enjoy this music.

Colour Palette - Blue, Red, Yellow. Predominantly male colours to show the reader that it is predominantly for males rather than females, especially in the contents and music style.

Bands/Artists Mentioned - Dave Grohl, Sparks, Ian Dury, Elvis, Cat Stevens, David Gilmour, Nirvana, Lou Reed.
These bands have been selected to appeal to more readers that might prefer these over others so it appeals to a more diverse audience.

Masthead style - Sans Serif, Bold and colourless. Male suited due to these reasons.
The masthead of mojo suggests that the music they present is for hardcore people who really enjoy this style of music. It also suggests that the music is not for the faint hearted. It also shows the masculinity due to the white sans serif font that can be taken as a very manly style that appeals less to females that would like a more orderly masthead.

Main Coverline Style - Serif style that is angled, referencing to the star vehicle and previewing what is in the mag.
The main coverline would suggest that
Minor coverline style - Smaller than main and previews some of the other artists inside.
Puff - Shows the amount of reviews and other facts that are featured.
USP - Free CD
Text placement - The texts wraps around Dave Grohl's face, It tries to keep the colour of the text from clashing.

Advertisements
Magazines will try and advertise their magazine in another magazine that appeals to the overall reader that they want to drag in to buy their magazine. They could advertise in other ways that appeals to the reader more. Free advertisement in the publishers other magazines is an option and a very valuable one as well.

O W N E R S H I P

The majority of magazines are published by nine companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market. This means they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.

Media Regulation & Law

IPSO are the regulation company for media and magazines that came into place after the breakdown of the PCC (The previous regulation company), they regulate and check the content of media and magazines to see if they comply with the code of conduct. They listen to complaints and investigate into complaints within magazines.

IMPRESS are the regulators for more digital media and magazines, they will involve in modern magazines rather than classic ones and attempt to help with the code of conduct for digital magazines. They also work about the public trusting the modern magazines.

Magazines have to follow the editors code which explains what magazines can and cannot do. There are set rules that they have to follow for their magazine to be legal. There are only certain things they can write and certain people they can feature.

The Future Of Magazines

Digitalisation of magazines has greatly affected to industry. Magazines are now created digitally rather than through a press, this is cheaper, quicker, more efficient and easier. Digitalisation has also brought along easier access to the articles.

Magazines that are printed will not survive, not many people will have the effort to buy and collect them. Digital magazines will survive but will not be as popular, there is enough open source information on the internet that people can access for free.
