1. The masthead is the main title of the magazine, showing the reader what they are reading. The masthead is usually very large and bold so it sticks out more. It is also usually in a colour that sticks out from the background.
2. On both these magazines the mastheads are big and at the top of the magazine, in a font that suits the main audience the magazine is looking for. The main, bold text that sticks out are in white and in black, contrasting the background colour to be more readable.
3. The date on the MOJO magazine is in the bottom right corner of the magazine, along with the price and barcode. The date on the Billboard magazine is under the title under the d at the end. Both of these are place to be visible, but out of the way of what the magazine is trying to show.
4. The main headline on the MOJO magazine is "Dave Growl, the songs that saved his life...", I can tell this because this text is the second largest, the largest being the title, it is in the middle of the screen and Dave Grohl is the main picture for this issue of the magazine. On the Billboard magazine, the main headline is "Katy Perry, inside the court queen of pop.", this is the main headline because it is the same colour as the title, making it look as important as the title, it is also the second biggest and is in serif, making it stand out from every other piece of text on the magazine. There is also Katy Perry as the main picture on the magazine as well, very much suggesting that Katy Perry is the main headline of the magazine.
5. There are 4 cover lines on the MOJO magazine, two on each side, all discussing different artists, and different things about them. They have the artist names in white to stick out and make them easy to read, the stories to go with them are in a different colour that makes them kept apart. The Billboard magazine has 4 cover lines, all on the left side of Katy Perry, they are quite small compared to everything else. They have orange colours for the titles of the stories, the details about the stories are black and stand out.
6. On the MOJO magazine, the writing is big and bold, it is all sans serif to appeal more to a male audience and is very loud. On the Billboard magazine, there is only one piece of text that is serif, that is the main headline, showing it's importance. Everything else is sans serif and very simple, this appeals to the more feminine audience that Billboard is looking for.
7. On the MOJO magazine there are lots of pictures that fill up the front of the magazine, the overall art of it is very cluttered and there are barely any plain colours that stay on their own. The design is very rough, appealing more to the male audience that they are looking for. The Billboard magazine has a plain background and is very limited in its clutter, it keeps very simple and it is in sans serif to keep a modern look and appeal to the female audience.
8. The background on the MOJO magazine is blue, a stereotypically masculine colour that pulls in men to get them to read it, the colour makes it relate to men so it is much more appealing. On the Billboard magazine, there is pink as the background, which relates to the female audience rather than trying to appeal to the male audience.
9. On the MOJO magazine there is lots of large text that clutters the magazine, showing its masculinity, lots of the text covers up other text. On the Billboard magazine, there is not a lot of text and it is all placed very simply, it very much appeals to the stereotypical feminine audience.
10. On the MOJO magazine there is the main image of Dave Grohl, this suggests to the reader that Dave Grohl is the main feature for the magazine. Billboard magazine has Katy Perry as the main image so that passers by can see who is in the magazine and make a judgement towards if they find it worth reading or not.
11. The MOJO magazine has a free CD that comes with it, included in the bottom left CD case. The Billboard magazine does not come with any free items or accessories.
12. On the MOJO magazine there is a menu strip underneath the CD case in the bottom left of the magazine, this lists the people included in the magazine and tells the reader if they want to read it or not. On the Billboard magazine there is a sort of menu strip to the right of Katy Perry, again listing people featured in the magazine, showing the reader if they are interested.
13. In the MOJO magazine it covers rock, and the many sub-genres of rock which appeal to the male audience. In the Billboard magazine, it covers the more feminine pop music.
14. The MOJO magazine shows with all of its cover features that it appeals more to a male audience rather than a female one, due to all the reasons listed above. The Billboard magazine is more attracted to a female audience due to the reasons above, mainly because of its main colour being pink.
15. The magazines put big names on the covers of their magazines to try and relate to the widest audience they can get, if the artist is more popular, the more people it can relate to, therefore getting more sales.
16. MOJO's main USP is David Grohl, due to him being the main picture on the magazine, this would try and appeal to men who enjoy Dave Grohl, for some people however, the free CD is a very important USP that MOJO uses in a way to get more people to buy the magazine, this is an important selling point because CDs are cheap and easy to produce, but people will find the magazine much more attractive if there is a physical item that comes with what they are getting. The Billboard magazine's USP is its genre, but mainly it would be Katy Perry on the front of the magazine, many people have heard of or are fans of Katy Perry, this helps introduce and bring in people who will buy the magazine and will keep them hooked for a long time.
