The masthead of this magazine is in bold, 3D writing that is sans serif to show the bold strength of the people who read the magazine, it is aimed more towards men due to it being large and dragging in mens attention from the manliness.
The blue, red and yellow colours on this magazine are more male-orientated colours, the blue signifies the gender of male, the red would signify blood or honour, the yellow would signify royalty, all of these are stereotypically values that are important to men.
The layout of this magazine is very cramped but does not go over the star's face, but filling up every other space available. It has high production value due to it being able to advertise and be payed by a lot of artists, making it cheaper to produce and being able to reach more people.
The main image is a medium shot to be able to fit all of the details and writing of the magazine on to the cover, but to still be able to recognise Dave Grohl from a distance. Dave Grohl has a serious facial expression, suggesting the topic about him in this magazine is also a serious topic. There is very standard lighting that brightens up his face and his details. He is wearing casual clothing, suggesting that he is not in the magazine for a special reason. There is also the minor image of the CD case, showing the community of the songs on the CD.
Dave Grohl's cover lines suggests that he is talking about a very emotional and serious topic, being backed up by the last point I made.

Related image

The star on this image is represented as a strong woman that is going against the gender stereotype. On the T-Shirt she is wearing it is showing some adjectives you would use to describe someone from a country that is in political and social crisis, but at the bottom on the one that is not crossed out it has an adjective that would more describe someone who is strong and adventurous rather than weak and in need. She very much goes against the stereotype of a foreign person and looks stereotypically richer than someone that you would expect to be from a poorer country. She looks very relaxed rather than frightened or angered, showing that she is going against the stereotype of a confused foreigner.

Related image
On this magazine cover Snoop Dogg is being represented as a rich man with a big house. This is shown by him expressing himself in a relaxed way, this represents the stereotype of a rich guy. He is wearing a chain and some rather dapper looking Christmas clothing, showing that he is rich enough to not care what people think of his clothes and accessories, this also shows the stereotype of being rich. He is holding his candy cane as if he were smoking it, following the stereotype of a rather hip gangster, it could also be interpreted as if he feels good due to the mild look of a smile on his face, showing that he feels young and good.

MOJO Cover:

  • The cover is coloured blue which is stereotyped towards men as the more masculine colour.
  • Dave Grohl is in fact male and has a hardened face, which is less attractive to females but more attractive in a male fan's perspective due to the fact that he looks strong and bold.
  • The font is big and appeals more to a masculine female-orientated man due to the fact that it is large and can be seen as masculine.
  • There are no females on this magazine which would show the masculinity of the magazine
I have learnt about the different types of stereotypes today that show men as stronger and women as weaker, some people could find this as sexist which also adds to the predominant fact that males are more attracted to the magazines orientated to them and vice versa.

Music Mag Covers

L/O: To create a music magazine cover showing understanding of representation.

Name: Complete

Peer Assessment by Rhys: You have colours that don't clash so they match with each other. You could vary the background colour more.

I have added a masthead that is in a style that suggests the genre and who the target audience might be. I have featured cover lines and a main cover line that show the features in the magazine. The background is red which signifies darkness and blood, the picture of Kian shows the reader the genre due to Kian wearing dark leather and playing the guitar.
I could vary the colour and variation on the background to add more emotion and contrast to the background. I could refine Kian's hair due to it being imperfect at the moment. I could add more cover lines that are even smaller. I could add a free CD sign on the cover as well.

I have added a free CD sign, I have changed the filter on Kian to make him more stylised and fitting. I have changed the cover lines and the name to make it more relevant to the genre

Cover Analysis

L/O: To analyse the cover of a magazine, linking it to genre and audience

Babyboomers - The generation of people between 1946 - 1964

Diversification - To become more diverse

Audience Address - Addressing the audience

Discerning - Good judgement

House Style - Editing conventions

Intertextuality - When a piece of text refers to another piece of media in the text

Shot type - Mid shot due to it going to his chest.
This is to add to the style of the magazine that will make it require less editing, this will also show who the star vehicle and show the reader if they like them and enjoy the magazine or not.

Star Vehicle - Dave Grohl, rock musician.
Dave Grohl is a well respected artist and will attract more readers in, mainly males that enjoy this music.

Colour Palette - Blue, Red, Yellow. Predominantly male colours to show the reader that it is predominantly for males rather than females, especially in the contents and music style.

Bands/Artists Mentioned - Dave Grohl, Sparks, Ian Dury, Elvis, Cat Stevens, David Gilmour, Nirvana, Lou Reed.
These bands have been selected to appeal to more readers that might prefer these over others so it appeals to a more diverse audience.

Masthead style - Sans Serif, Bold and colourless. Male suited due to these reasons.
The masthead of mojo suggests that the music they present is for hardcore people who really enjoy this style of music. It also suggests that the music is not for the faint hearted. It also shows the masculinity due to the white sans serif font that can be taken as a very manly style that appeals less to females that would like a more orderly masthead.

Main Coverline Style - Serif style that is angled, referencing to the star vehicle and previewing what is in the mag.
The main coverline would suggest that
Minor coverline style - Smaller than main and previews some of the other artists inside.
Puff - Shows the amount of reviews and other facts that are featured.
USP - Free CD
Text placement - The texts wraps around Dave Grohl's face, It tries to keep the colour of the text from clashing.

Sales
Magazines will sell their magazines as a subscription to a reader, they will know the readers location and email address, therefore if they were to unsubscribe, then the media company could message them when a sale is on so that they pay the subscription.

Advertisements
Magazines will try and advertise their magazine in another magazine that appeals to the overall reader that they want to drag in to buy their magazine. They could advertise in other ways that appeals to the reader more. Free advertisement in the publishers other magazines is an option and a very valuable one as well.

O W N E R S H I P

The majority of magazines are published by nine companies but their titles make up nearly 75% of the market. This means they have a massive influence over audiences and their companies will only get bigger as they control most of the market.

Media Regulation & Law

IPSO are the regulation company for media and magazines that came into place after the breakdown of the PCC (The previous regulation company), they regulate and check the content of media and magazines to see if they comply with the code of conduct. They listen to complaints and investigate into complaints within magazines.

IMPRESS are the regulators for more digital media and magazines, they will involve in modern magazines rather than classic ones and attempt to help with the code of conduct for digital magazines. They also work about the public trusting the modern magazines.

Magazines have to follow the editors code which explains what magazines can and cannot do. There are set rules that they have to follow for their magazine to be legal. There are only certain things they can write and certain people they can feature.

The Future Of Magazines

Digitalisation of magazines has greatly affected to industry. Magazines are now created digitally rather than through a press, this is cheaper, quicker, more efficient and easier. Digitalisation has also brought along easier access to the articles.

Magazines that are printed will not survive, not many people will have the effort to buy and collect them. Digital magazines will survive but will not be as popular, there is enough open source information on the internet that people can access for free.

Genre & Target Audience

L/O: To identify target audiences for a variety of music magazine genres.

The genre for the Clash magazine is underground music. Its target audience is for males and females between the ages of 14 - 32.
The genres included in this edition of the magazine is Rock music, Dabke, Experimental music and Neo-Soul. These genres appeal more to a younger audience due to the lighter and more contrasted colours, and the mixed variety of genres in the magazine. This magazine is more appealing to white, younger people, who are mid to lower class and enjoy social media and being rebellious. This audience is made self-confident people who enjoy being with their friends and doing things they enjoy. The audience for this magazine are explorers who enjoy finding new music that they will get into. They are more disconnected from regular society because they enjoy many types of music and people.

The genre for this magazine is pop music, the artists advertised on this magazine are people who usually make pop music. The target audience for this magazine is for young white girls between the ages of 12 and 26. I can tell this because of the pink and simple style of the writing, it appeals more to the younger girls who enjoy being together and listening to their music. The price for this magazine would suggest that the audience is middle class or upper, being able to afford this magazine  you would have to have a decent job and income. The location of this magazine would be for the UK and for parts of the USA that are more modern. This audience are drop outs who don't usually care about education, they just want to have parties and have fun. They are reformers who are very close minded and only like their own music.

This magazine is a death and heavy metal magazine, the themes of religion and darkness is spread by the crosses and pentagrams that cover the magazine cover. The audience for this magazine are white men between the ages of 25 and 50. They are strugglers with lower income and who have had worse of a life than usual. They are rebels and drop outs that don't obey the law and enjoy listening to their music and having some illegal fun.

This magazine's genre is rock music due to it's artists being more involved in mainly punk rock music. The audience for this magazine is between the ages of 14 and 40, the audience is mainly lower to middle class, enjoying more rebellious styles and ways of living, they are reformers who enjoy being outlaws. They are innovators that like to explore their genre of music. They are white males and females occasionally that live around London or cities in the USA.

Magazine Cover Terminology, Layout & Analysis

L/O: To analyse music magazine covers using appropriate terminology.

1. The masthead is the main title of the magazine, showing the reader what they are reading. The masthead is usually very large and bold so it sticks out more. It is also usually in a colour that sticks out from the background.

2. On both these magazines the mastheads are big and at the top of the magazine, in a font that suits the main audience the magazine is looking for. The main, bold text that sticks out are in white and in black, contrasting the background colour to be more readable.

3. The date on the MOJO magazine is in the bottom right corner of the magazine, along with the price and barcode. The date on the Billboard magazine is under the title under the d at the end. Both of these are place to be visible, but out of the way of what the magazine is trying to show.

4. The main headline on the MOJO magazine is "Dave Growl, the songs that saved his life...", I can tell this because this text is the second largest, the largest being the title, it is in the middle of the screen and Dave Grohl is the main picture for this issue of the magazine. On the Billboard magazine, the main headline is "Katy Perry, inside the court queen of pop.", this is the main headline because it is the same colour as the title, making it look as important as the title, it is also the second biggest and is in serif, making it stand out from every other piece of text on the magazine. There is also Katy Perry as the main picture on the magazine as well, very much suggesting that Katy Perry is the main headline of the magazine.

5. There are 4 cover lines on the MOJO magazine, two on each side, all discussing different artists, and different things about them. They have the artist names in white to stick out and make them easy to read, the stories to go with them are in a different colour that makes them kept apart. The Billboard magazine has 4 cover lines, all on the left side of Katy Perry, they are quite small compared to everything else. They have orange colours for the titles of the stories, the details about the stories are black and stand out.

6. On the MOJO magazine, the writing is big and bold, it is all sans serif to appeal more to a male  audience and is very loud. On the Billboard magazine, there is only one piece of text that is serif, that is the main headline, showing it's importance. Everything else is sans serif and very simple, this appeals to the more feminine audience that Billboard is looking for.

7. On the MOJO magazine there are lots of pictures that fill up the front of the magazine, the overall art of it is very cluttered and there are barely any plain colours that stay on their own. The design is very rough, appealing more to the male audience that they are looking for. The Billboard magazine has a plain background and is very limited in its clutter, it keeps very simple and it is in sans serif to keep a modern look and appeal to the female audience.

8. The background on the MOJO magazine is blue, a stereotypically masculine colour that pulls in men to get them to read it, the colour makes it relate to men so it is much more appealing. On the Billboard magazine, there is pink as the background, which relates to the female audience rather than trying to appeal to the male audience.

9. On the MOJO magazine there is lots of large text that clutters the magazine, showing its masculinity, lots of the text covers up other text. On the Billboard magazine, there is not a lot of text and it is all placed very simply, it very much appeals to the stereotypical feminine audience.

10. On the MOJO magazine there is the main image of Dave Grohl, this suggests to the reader that Dave Grohl is the main feature for the magazine. Billboard magazine has Katy Perry as the main image so that passers by can see who is in the magazine and make a judgement towards if they find it worth reading or not.

11. The MOJO magazine has a free CD that comes with it, included in the bottom left CD case. The Billboard magazine does not come with any free items or accessories.

12. On the MOJO magazine there is a menu strip underneath the CD case in the bottom left of the magazine, this lists the people included in the magazine and tells the reader if they want to read it or not. On the Billboard magazine there is a sort of menu strip to the right of Katy Perry, again listing people featured in the magazine, showing the reader if they are interested.

13. In the MOJO magazine it covers rock, and the many sub-genres of rock which appeal to the male audience. In the Billboard magazine, it covers the more feminine pop music.

14. The MOJO magazine shows with all of its cover features that it appeals more to a male audience rather than a female one, due to all the reasons listed above. The Billboard magazine is more attracted to a female audience due to the reasons above, mainly because of its main colour being pink.

15. The magazines put big names on the covers of their magazines to try and relate to the widest audience they can get, if the artist is more popular, the more people it can relate to, therefore getting more sales.

16. MOJO's main USP is David Grohl, due to him being the main picture on the magazine, this would try and appeal to men who enjoy Dave Grohl, for some people however, the free CD is a very important USP that MOJO uses in a way to get more people to buy the magazine, this is an important selling point because CDs are cheap and easy to produce, but people will find the magazine much more attractive if there is a physical item that comes with what they are getting. The Billboard magazine's USP is its genre, but mainly it would be Katy Perry on the front of the magazine, many people have heard of or are fans of Katy Perry, this helps introduce and bring in people who will buy the magazine and will keep them hooked for a long time.

It's a jungle, with an abandoned place. Mr Drake is looking around suspiciously. A lot of green. The scene is quite aged like mature cheddar and suspense building. It is quite Low-Key.

This shows seriousness in the scene and suspense. This is shown by the body language and facial expressions. Sam looks mildly angry. His body language looks quite aggressive. Nathan's facial expression shows him looking disappointed. The setting of the jungle adds isolation to the scene. All of these add suspense to lead up to a large part of the story. It is quite dark to have shade on either side of both their faces. This makes them look suspicious.

Cuts from one scene to the other either where the action is the same or the composition is the same.

Eyeline Match
A cut between someone looking at something and then showing what they're looking at.

Shot reverse shot
Used to show a conversation or dialogue between two people

Montage
Lots of different scenes showing a long passing of time.

Transitions

Fade in / Fade out
Dissolving either to or from black or white to show time has passed.

Dissolve
Blending one shot into another.

Wipe
When a scene wipes into another.

Editing has been used to create tension when cutting, in Hot Fuzz when Sergeant Angel is on his horse the cutting is quite slow when everyone is staring at him and then it starts to speed up as it gets closer to the fight scene. In the battle there are a lot of eyeline match cuts to add suspense when they are shooting. The pensioners start to pull out guns and have cuts to the people shooting, they are very short cuts but it varies from scene to scene.

Eden Project hosting the annual world pasty championship

Open savoury: Junior & Professional, categories from the competition.

Eden wishes to celebrate the traditional Cornish pasty recipe (and test out new varieties)

We are gonna interview last years winner Rhys Heath who is supposedly going again this year

Recently the world pasty championship was held at the eden project. This an annual event held event every year to celebrate the tradition of cornish pasty.

Anchorman: Kian Bampton:
The Eden Project are hosting the World Pasty Championship here's our reporter Rhys Heath with more detail

Report
The pasty is a pastry product filled with different ingredients, a classic recipe is steak, potato, onion and swede. Originated from miners who wanted a hot but nutritious snack, Miners never used to eat the crimp, they used to hold that with their dirty miner hands and eat the meat and throw the crimp away to the cornish pixie.
Recently the world pasty championship was held at the eden project and David Timmins got first place in the open savoury professional with a pasty containing steak and kidney meanwhile in the open savoury junior Megan Packer took first place.

This is the sixth world pasty championship that the Eden Project has hosted, and it's incredible how
they're making the Cornwall community celebrate their beloved Pasty. An addition to this years competition is the Gluten-Free category, this is an amazing opportunity for more people to get involved in the event.

Kian:
Thank you Rhys, here's Jamie with an interview on this years winner.

Interview:

Good Morning David, today I would like to ask you some questions about the pasty competition

What got you to enter the pasty competition?

How hard is it to make pasties and why?

Did you enjoy making the pasties you made this year?

What was the atmosphere of the competition like?

What kind of pasty did you make this year?

Do you think you will enter the championship next year?

Stop Motion Research

https://vimeo.com/18125967

The story was about objects coming to life and moving around a house at christmas, a vacuum  cleaner goes around and frees objects around the house.

It was created by taking pictures of objects around a house.

They used aerial shots, POV shots, over the shoulder shots and high angle shots.

Make it more seamless because it stutters quite a lot.

In my own animation I will make it more seamless and use a variety of shots and locations.

Composition

The rule of thirds is the use of the grid lines to position a photo and the objects in the photo to make the image look more interesting, full and just make it look better.
